If there’s one Midwest destination that continues to surprise me in all seasons, it has to be South Bend, Indiana. There is truly so much to see and do in this area and always something new popping up! We had so much fun on our recent visit and got to enjoy some of our favorite snowy season adventures like tubing and ice skating, while also trying out some new activities like duck pin bowling and a cat cafe.

Whether you love to get outside and make the most of snowy season fun, or you’d rather adventure indoors, I’ve rounded up the best places to visit for the perfect winter weekend getaway.

St. Patrick's County Park - During the snowy season, this state park transforms into a true winter wonderland offering miles of groomed cross country ski trails, snowshoe and hiking trails, and an epic snow tubing hill. All equipment rentals are available on site and once you've secured your gear you can head out to enjoy peaceful, scenic views along miles of wooded trails. Cross country ski rentals are available for $10/per person with a $5/per person trail fee. Snow tubing is also available for $5/per person with three separate tubing lanes. You do need to pull your own tube to the top of the hill and there are both adult and child size tubes available. 

Ironworks Plaza - Strap on your skates and enjoy this 17,500-square foot ice ribbon located in the heart of downtown Mishawaka. Go at night to skate under the lights and be sure to warm up with a hot chocolate from The South Bend Chocolate Company. Skating sessions are 90 minutes in length and can be booked online in advance or on site day of. Several local restaurants are within minutes of the rink including Mishawaka Public House, Jesus Latin Grill & Tequila Bar (see below), Chicory Café, Doc Pierce's, Sun King Brewery, Social Cantina, and Zing Japanese Fusion.

Potawatomi Conservatories - Explore a haven of tranquility within Potawatomi Park. Here, you can wander through two distinct botanical gardens filled with lush, tropical blooms as well as an arid Desert Dome. Be sure to check out their Blue Agave plant will which be in full bloom during summer of 2026 and only happens once every 50 years. There is a $5 entrance fee per person.

Cat Lady Cafe - Cuddle up in a cozy cafe while you snuggle with the sweetest group of cats who are all up for adoption from the Humane Society of St. Joseph County. Coffee and treats are available for purchase. One hour sessions must be reserved online in advance. 

Notre Dame Athletics - A trip to South Bend isn't complete without cheering on the Fighting Irish. During the winter season you can enjoy basketball games at Purcell Pavilion or hockey games at the Compton Family Ice Arena. Both offer a fun, family-friendly environment where you can watch Big 10 rivals and primetime matchups. 

South Bend Museum of Art - Offering guests insight into the art, history and culture of the region and nation, this architectural delight occupies three levels of the Century Center and features one permanent gallery and four changing galleries. The museum operates on donations for entry and regularly hosts classes and traveling exhibits. 

​Ivy Alley Social House - The newest hot spot in South Bend, Ivy Alley offers the ultimate winter hangout with duck pin bowling, craft cocktails and a mouth-watering menu. Bowling lanes can be reserved online in advance or you can just visit for lunch or dinner. 

 Jesus Latin Grill  - Offering an infusion of cultures, flavors, and spices straight from Cuba, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Chile, Argentina, and Peru, dining here offers a true Latin experience serving brunch, lunch and dinner. Over 250 tequila and mezcal options to choose from, with cocktails hand crafted by mixologists. Online reservations are accepted. 

O'Rourkes Public House - Experience an Irish tradition with authentic pub fare in a lively environment. Home to the "best wings in South Bend." Located in the heart of Eddy Street Commons, this is a great spot to grab a drink or dinner before cheering on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Online reservations are accepted. 

If you’re in search of your next family-friendly Midwest road trip destination, I have the perfect spot...and the location may surprise you! Greater Lafayette, Indiana is located along the scenic Wabash River offering access to two great cities and one historic university with a perfect blend of history, modern attractions, unique animal encounters, and hands on exploration for kids of all ages. We visited when my daughter was around 2 years old and we had the best time. Many of the places we stopped at would also be great for older kids and even teenagers.

After arriving to town, our first stop was Columbian Park which offers so much to see and do. One of the highlights of the park is Columbian Park Zoo which is home to nearly 200 animals throughout seven different exhibits including a wallaby walk, butterfly garden, and penguin cove. The zoo is easy to navigate with children and we loved how close you could get to view the animals. You can also purchase tickets to ride the train that departs every hour and circles the entire park. We also loved exploring the SIA playground which has three towering climbing structures and multiple hillside slides. 

Next we headed to the historic downtown Lafayette to grab a sweet treat at McCords Candies. This vintage candy shop is located within the same building it originally opened in back in 1912 and features the original candy cases and soda fountain counter. You can shop a variety of specialty handmade candies and other treats or enjoy one of their signature shakes or sodas which are mixed right in front of you. 

A short walk down the street is Flourish Studio and Classroom where kids let the creative juices flow as you create a one of a kind craft or attend one of their many workshops. They had a variety of pieces to paint and decorate which my daughter had so much fun doing as well as regularly scheduled classes with everything from macrame and slime to crochet and painting. 

After a full afternoon of fun we checked into our room at Union Club Hotel located on the campus of Purdue University. Shortly after you enter you'll notice the design is inspired by the colors and history of the university and the majority of employees are students. We loved walking through campus each morning and it was the perfect location for exploring the Greater Lafayette area. On the first night of our stay we enjoyed an amazing dinner at 8Eleven Modern Bistro which gets its name from Purdue alum, Neil Armstrong who piloted the iconic Gemini 8 and Apollo 11 space missions. Guests can also enjoy Leaps Coffee and Artisan Pastries as well as the Boiler Up Bar, a full service spa, and fitness center on site. If you're looking for another fun activity for the family, be sure to visit Union Rack and Roll located next door at Purdue Memorial Union.

Our second day started with breakfast at Indiana's oldest drive-in diner, Triple XXX Family Restaurant. The nostalgia hits as soon as you enter and take a seat at one of the bar stools that line the wrap-around bar. We went for breakfast (which was delicious) but they also hold the claim to fame for one of the best burgers around which was put to the test by Guy Fieri when it was featured on the hit show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. 

The rest of our morning was spent playing and exploring at Imagination Station - a hands-on, interactive museum where children can discover the world of space, science, engineering, and technology. The exhibits change regularly so there is always something new and exciting to see. The lower level is geared more toward school-age children with lots of science experiments and simulations. Upstairs is a preschool and toddler area which is where we spent most of our time with a slide, giant building blocks, pretend play and so much more. 

After we had worked up an appetite we headed to Arni's Market Square location which has been serving up delicious pizzas for over 60 years. The interior design is so fun. Be sure to ask for a table in the toy room where the walls are lined with vintage toys and sports memorabilia. We tried the Maui Wowie pizza which was fantastic. If pizza isn't your thing, the menu also features salads and subs.

Wea Creek Orchard is an amazing fall adventure but they also have lavender and sunflower fields throughout the summer months. We loved taking a tractor ride around the property and wandering through the apple orchard to pick our own. You can also sip on an apple cider slushie or lavender lemonade while you shop a variety of mums, preserves, jams and other goods. 

For dinner we enjoyed a lively cantina vibe with authentic Mexican flavors at Nom Nom Tacos & Tequila. The interior has lots of fun photo-worthy spots and they also have a small outdoor patio. We had the guacamole, shrimp tempura tacos and chicken quesadilla and it was truly some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. They also have a full bar serving up irresistible margaritas and speciality cocktails. 

We ended the night enjoying a sweet treat at Igloo Frozen Custard which holds the claim to fame as the oldest continuously operated frozen custard stand. They have a menu chocked full of recipes passed down for generations like Aunt Kathy’s Dirt Sundae and their Famous Fruit Drink which was created specially for their grandma who didn't like soda. Seasonal flavors for fall include pumpkin, cinnamon and their signature apple dumpling sundae. 

After fueling up with coffee from Leaps Coffee & Artisan Pastries located within Union Club Hotel, we were off to explore the 78-acre Wolf Park which celebrates 50 years of dedicated wildlife conservation. We enjoyed a guided tour around the property to observe and learn more about the resident wolves, bison, and foxes. It was fascinating to learn more about the wolves and watch them interact with each other and the animal caretakers. Reservations are recommended for tours.

Next, we made the short drive to Prophetstown State Park to explore the 1920s farm onsite, called The Farm at Prophetstown. There is a fee to the enter the state park at the main entrance. When we arrived at the farm, it truly felt like we were stepping back in time as we learned what life was like decades ago. You can tour the main farmhouse as well as the barn and grounds while you visit with horses, pigs, chickens, ducks and goats. You can even help feed the livestock and chickens, collect eggs, and work in the garden. Barn chores are done each day at 8 am and 3 pm. While in Battle Ground, we stopped for lunch at TC's Restaurant and Tavern which had a full menu of burgers, handhelds, wings and more. 

To end an amazing trip we stopped at Kent's Cucurbits which is home to one of the largest pumpkin patches I think I've ever been to - the selection here is insane. They also have a gigantic 'prizewinner' pumpkin on display as well as unique pumpkins that have grown with their own faces - you'll have to see it to believe it. You can also get lost in a corn maze, shoot an apple cannon, take a ride on a pumpkin train and feed adorable goats. 

If you’re in search of your next Midwest girls’ weekend destination that has a little bit of everything from art, nature, history, shopping, live music, rooftop cocktails and great food..I’ve got you covered! My mom and I recently visited Elkhart, Indiana and had the best time. I couldn't believe how much this city had to offer while still maintaining its small town charm.

Our first stop after arriving to town was dinner at The Vine which had an outstanding menu and offered a true wine and dine experience in a relaxed, bistro setting. We ordered the baked brie as an appetizer which ended up being our favorite dish of the night. I also had the tortellini alfredo with shrimp and my mom had their signature Caesar salad. They have a great craft cocktail and wine selection and regularly host live music. 

After dinner, we headed over to Jackson's Rooftop for a cocktail. The views here are everything - be sure to go around sunset. There are several different seating areas to choose from as well as fire pits to keep you warm on those chilly evenings. At the end of the night we checked into our room at the Hilton Garden Inn which was beautifully designed with modern furnishings and spacious suites. The hotel is also a great location just a few minutes outside of downtown which was perfect for exploring throughout the weekend.

We started the morning with a delicious and healthy breakfast at Moringa Tree Cafe which had such a cozy café vibe. Their menu features a variety of dishes focused on local, organic & nutrient-dense ingredients including smoothies, toasts, and breakfast tacos. Next door to the cafe is a marketplace which offers everything from locally-raised meats, dairy and pantry staples as well as in-season produce. 

After fueling up we we off to wander through Wellfield Botanic Gardens. The half-mile paved walking loop around the property features over 20 themed garden areas as well as 18 acres of lakes, streams, waterfalls and other water features. It was so peaceful here and the property runs right along the river so we loved sitting and listening to the flowing water. If you're traveling with little ones they also had the cutest Children's Garden with lots of interactive elements and a treehouse with swings. 

Then we drove back to downtown Elkhart to do some shopping at the many boutiques. I loved how walkable the area was and you could easily pop into several stores right along Main Street. A few of our favorite stops were The Twisted String, Coco & Common Boutique, and Main Street Mercantile. 

For lunch we stopped by Bird in the Hand which offers a laid-back vibe serving the best chicken sandwich, smash burgers, fries, and salads. You order at the counter and enjoy your meal inside or out on their patio. 

If you love learning more about the history of places you travel to, you won't want to miss the opportunity to tour the Ruthmere Museum. Built by Albert and Elizabeth Beardsley in 1908, the home was once the centerpiece of Elkhart  society. It has since been lovingly restored to offer guests a look into what life was like during the “Gilded Age.” You can tour rooms that are lavishly appointed with historic furnishings, and world-class fine and decorative arts. You'll also get to wander the grounds, admire vintage automobiles in the garage and even see the underground tunnel that leads to the outdoor greenhouse. While visiting the campus you can also tour the home of  Elkhart’s founder, Havilah Beardsley.

Following our tour we headed back downtown for dinner at Brass Elk Brewing. They had a great selection of craft beers on tap - my favorite was the Elk Lime which had the perfect hint of lime. We also enjoyed their pretzel sticks and Brussel sprouts as well as the fish and chips. In addition to seating in the tap room they have a spacious outdoor patio with table top fire pits. 

We ended our evening with live music and dancing at the Celebration Under the Stars featuring the musical stylings of Kool & The Gang and The Commodores in celebration of the Lerner Theatre’s 100th anniversary. It was such a fun night and a beautiful tribute to the city's role as the "Band Instrument Capital of the World" as many of the brass instruments used on that stage that night were made in Elkhart. 

Before heading back to Michigan we stopped for breakfast and coffee at Relish Cafe located inside the historic Hotel Elkhart. They had a breakfast buffet option as well as a full menu including the best breakfast sandwich and of course coffee. 

Depending on the season you're visiting, you can't miss the opportunity to visit some of the many Quilt Gardens locations throughout the area. This free event happens May through September and features more than a million vibrant blooms in gigantic gardens, and hand-painted, super-sized murals. We spotted one of the gardens outside of Wellfield Gardens and two of the murals during our trip. For the full list of locations, and to plan your adventures in Elkhart County, click here. 

We recently visited Silver Lake in Mears, Michigan for our eight year wedding anniversary with our almost two year old daughter. I love this area so much and feel like it has such a different and more laid back vibe than the other Michigan beach towns. I also think it's a perfect getaway for families as there are so many great adventures for kids of all ages. 

Mac Woods Dune Rides offers 40 minute rides through the dunes on sections only their company has access to. You’ll fly over the dunes and around curves and get to make a stop to get out at Lake Michigan to take some photos and put your toes in the water. The ride is suitable for all ages - we took my daughter who is almost two and she loved it. Just keep in mind you feel the bumps more the farther back you sit so they will seat you more toward the front if you have little kids with you. The rides are all first come first serve so when you arrive you’ll go in and buy your tickets and wait for them to call your name to get on your truck. The wait can get pretty long during peak summer season - we went right when they opened and were able to get on the first ride out without a wait. There is a gift shop on site as well as a small play area and Whippy Dip is right next door if you need a treat while you wait. It’s such a fun ride and you get to learn a lot about the history of the area and the work that was done to restore the dunes after the Great Chicago fire. 

BONUS adventure: Depending on the age of your children, this area is best known for the section of dunes at Silver Lake State Park that you can access with an ORV or ATV. Our daughter was too young so we didn't get to go this trip but I have gone with my sister and rented through Silverback Offroad and it was such a fun thrill! 

We visited this epic adventure farm for the first time in the fall and I knew I had to come back and experience it in the summer. Lewis Farms is located in New Era, Michigan and they offer so many things to do including exotic animal experiences and a giant petting farm where you can feed and interact with camels, cows, goats, deer and so much more. In the summer their main attraction is Splash Acres which is a giant splash pad. Flower Mania also happens in August and you can wander through the beautiful flower fields and pick a giant vase for $19.95.

Your ticket gets you access to over 46 different attractions including a carousel, barrel train, corn bin, bubbles, ball town and so much more. You could easily make a full day out of your visit here. They also have some really great food options including epic milkshakes, a pretzel wagon, flavored lemonade and Social Goat Tavern which serves pizza and great cocktails. Their fall season begins on in early September and the park becomes decked out in all things pumpkin. They also have a cider donut slushie, a corn maze and a giant pumpkin patch.

Located just down the street from Lewis Farms, this 100 year old dairy farm serves unlimited chocolate milk. Country Dairy is a working dairy farm that also has a farm store and restaurant. In the store you can purchase milk, cheese, meat, and ice cream or enjoy lunch with a full menu of wraps, sandwiches and burgers. Their food is really good - and cheesy of course - I had the ham and cheese hoagie with sweet mustard. They sandwiches all come with cheese curds on the side and the kids meals come with a complimentary scoop of ice cream. Outdoors they have a playground and plenty of picnic table seating. 

During our visit we also took a wagon ride tour of the farm. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and you get to go inside the cow barns and see the robotic milking process and even love on some baby calves. It’s a really neat experience to learn more about how they care for the cows and how the farm has changed over the years. 

This is one of my favorite lighthouses in Michigan and it's very easily accessible for all ages and abilities as there is a paved path from the parking lot that leads right to the base of the lighthouse. You can also climb the dunes nearby for a different view or take a tour of the lighthouse to climb to the top. Tours are offered Mondays from 11a to 4p and Tuesday-Sunday from 10a to 5p. There is a small trailer near the parking lot where you can purchase tickets and find out more information. The lighthouse is located within Silver Lake State Park so you do need to purchase or display a state recreation passport to enter. And be sure to walk down to the water to enjoy a beach day on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. 

We love visiting new wineries and breweries on our travels and this felt like such a hidden gem. And if you're looking for a spot both the adults and kids will love this is it. All of the wines are 100% sourced from grapes grown on the farm and you can sip your drinks right beside the vineyard. The winery is located on Crystal Lake and has beautiful views overlooking the water. There is also a putting green on site which both my husband and my daughter loved. They even had a set of kids clubs for her to play with. You can participate in a traditional guided tasting, order a flight or sip by the glass. They serve rose, fruit wine and cider in addition to red and white varieties as well as pizza and appetizers. 

Downtown Mears isn't very large and you'll quickly discover that this is the place to be! Craig's Cruisers offers tons of family fun from go karts, an arcade, mini golf and bumper boats. And within the same lot you'll find the "best ever wings" at Silver Lake Chicken Shack. They truly are some of the best we've had. You'll order at the counter or one of their kiosks and then wait for your name to be called. This is a very casual spot with picnic table seating. They also regularly have live music in the evenings. 

This experience has been on my bucket list for so long and it was 100% worth the wait. Gather ‘round the fire for this Great Lakes tradition brought to this area by Scandinavian immigrants more than 100 years ago. The highlight of the night is the “boil over” when kerosene is thrown onto the fire, sending flames high in the sky and causing the water in the kettle to boil over and burning off the oil that has accumulated. Boils take place beginning in mid-June every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday through Labor Day. Select Thursdays are added based on demand. Cost is $29.95/pp ages 11 and up and $1.50/year of age for 10 and under. Menu consists of boiled whitefish fillets, potatoes and onions paired with garlic bread, coleslaw and cherry pie for dessert. Seating is family style at picnic tables and you can bring your own drinks and plates. Reservations are only accepted over the phone beginning in March and they do book up fast so plan ahead for next year. Be sure you take time to wander around the beautiful gardens and lavender labyrinth before your meal.

Even if you're not a golfer this is worth the stop for lunch or dinner. Their pizza is amazing - be sure to try the herb crust and bread bites. They also have a great cocktail selection. It's a very laid back vibe on the patio overlooking the golf course with plenty of space for kids to run around with yard games and live music.  

If there's one thing Silver Lake doesn't have a shortage of its ice cream shops. But who can blame them - everyone loves this iconic summer treat. We've tried Whippy Dip, Silver Scoops and The Other Place and they were all great so you really can't go wrong with any that you choose. Silver Scoops had Dole Whip which we love and The Other Place had the biggest waffle cones we've ever seen (don't say I didn't warn you). Whippy Dip is famous for their caramel turtle sundae and they also serve breakfast and coffee in the mornings. 

We stayed at Silver Sands Hotel and Resort which is located right on the shores of Silver Lake with private beach access. They have beautifully remodeled cabins which can sleep 6 with two and three bedroom options. Each has a different vibe and design - I loved the wallpaper in ours. The cabins do have a fire pit as well as a full kitchen and bath. If you’re looking for a more traditional stay they also have plenty of standard hotel suites with balconies overlooking downtown. Guests also get access to a private pool which we spent a lot of time in during our trip. My other favorite part about this property is the location. Parking is free onsite and then you can walk to the downtown attractions, restaurants and shopping. 

If you’re planning a trip to northern Michigan and looking for the perfect place to stay with beautiful views, peaceful vibes, and amazing amenities the whole family will love - I have just the spot for you! In addition to spacious RV lots, Sun Outdoors Petoskey Bay Harbor offers premium one and two bedroom cottages with all the comforts of home including a full kitchen and bath. As someone who loves the vibes and amenities that come with staying at an RV resort, but doesn't own their own rig, the cottages were an ideal option for our family and allowed us to experience all that Northern Michigan has to offer at a great value.

The cottage we stayed in sleeps four adults and two children with a twin bunk room, a queen size bed, and a loft with a full size bed. The living area was also a nice size with a couch and dining table and the added space on the deck and picnic table in the lawn out front was great to enjoy meals together. My daughter still sleeps in a travel crib and we had enough room to set that up comfortably. Each of the cottages also has two parking spots directly in front the unit. The resort itself was beautifully landscaped and we loved waking up and enjoying coffee on the deck in the mornings before walking around the grounds. 

When you stay at Sun Outdoors you’re also just a short drive from downtown Petoskey and Charlevoix and about 30 minutes from Harbor Springs making it the ideal location for exploring the best shopping, restaurants and attractions in the area.

Below are some of our favorite eats and adventures from our recent trip: 

• Pond Hill Farm - This farm market is so fun to visit all year round but it was my first time going in the summer and the flower filled gardens alone made it worth it. There is so much here to see and do here you can definitely make a full afternoon of it. For kids there is a nature playground, farm animals, human foosball and volleyball courts, a basketball shooting game and a gnome house hunt through the woods. Adults can hike on miles of trails, enjoy live music, or sip on wine and beer in the tasting room. 
• Sturgeon River Pottery - We passed this shop on our drive out to Sun Outdoors and knew we had to come back. They offer a huge selection of pottery, garden decor, furniture, Petoskey Stones, and hand-crafted gifts. 
• Coveyou Scenic Market - This roadside stop in Michigan may not look like much but it is definitely worth the stop! It is a charming farm market with so many locally sourced goods. There is everything here from fresh produce and flowers, to jams, pickles and sauces, as well as body care and speciality gifts. You’ll also find well known northern Michigan brands like American Spoon and Cherry Republic. There is a large selection of flowers in the garden center and you can’t miss their multi level patio with stunning views of the river valley.
• ​The Back Lot - If you're looking for a fun and casual spot to eat with something that is sure to please everyone's taste buds, this is a great option. It's a food truck lot with everything from pizza and tacos to gourmet grilled cheese and ice cream. Seating is all first come first serve and they have a full bar with a large selection of local brews on tap. 
• Petoskey Pretzel Company - I walked past this small shop on my way to Bayfront Park and there was a line out the door so I knew I had to see what it was all about. As the name implies, they serve delicious hand-thrown soft pretzels and dipping sauces. I tried the classic with cheese and garlic parmesan with marinara. 
• Little Juice - The cutest coffee and juice shop in downtown Harbor Springs. I had a Pink Pony smoothie which was delicious. They also have açaí bowls if you're looking for more of a brunch vibe. The interior is beautifully designed and there is both indoor and outdoor seating available.
• Tom's Moms Cookies - A true northern Michigan staple. There is always a line down the sidewalk here and for good reason. They serve the best homemade cookies with rotating flavors. You can order by the single cookie or by the dozen. The line moves fast so don't let it deter you from enjoying this sweet treat. 
• Brandy's Harbortown - Located right along the marina with great views of all the boats. It feels a bit like food hall or food truck vibe as there are four different menus you can choose from depending on the vibe you’re looking for. There was a wings and beer menu, fresh catch which had fish and lobster rolls, Brandy’s Kitchen with classic handhelds and burgers and Heirloom with grain bowls. They also had a really good cocktail menu which you can order from the main bar.
• Horton Bay General Store - Just up the road from Lake Charlevoix with a past that dates back to 1876 when it served as the town’s general store for the influx of workers and families at the local sawmill. Today, it still holds much of the original charm with shelves stocked with local makers and artisans. You can enjoy coffee, ice cream and deli sandwiches. They also have a small seating area in the back of the store as well as a beer garden on the outdoor patio. 

Michigan is well known for growing a variety of fruit including apples, grapes, cherries and peaches. But did you know we also have cranberry bogs in Michigan? I didn’t either until I discovered this hidden gem farm in South Haven last fall.

For two weekends in early October DeGrandchamp Farms hosts a cranberry festival where you can take a wagon ride out to the bogs and watch how they harvest the fresh cranberries.

Fresh cranberries in Michigan are in season throughout October and November. The 2025 Cranberry Harvest Days will take place Saturday, October 4 and 11 from 10a - 4p. Parking is free on site and it does tend to get crowded so be sure to arrive early or plan to wait in line to access the trolley. 

The event itself is free but you do need to purchase tickets on site for the trolley ride out to the bogs. The trolleys run throughout the entire festival and it is about a 15-20 minute ride each way. Once you arrive at the bogs you are free to walk around and watch as they harvest a sea of red, ripe cranberries. There are several different bogs and they harvest them all at different times so it just depends on when you go for what step in the process you’ll see. 

You can stay out in the fields for as long as you'd like and when you're ready, take the wagon back to the packaging facility for the second half the tour where you'll get to observe the sorting line to learn about how they sort and package cranberries for processing.

Indiana Dinosaur Museum - Step back in time, roughly 1.9 billion years ago, to learn what life was like when dinosaurs roamed the earth. The Indiana Dinosaur museum is home to 43 dinosaur sculptures and 30 skeletons as well as real dinosaur skin - a very rare archaeological find. They also had real artifacts from the Jurassic Park movies. In addition to learning more about the different types of dinosaurs you can view a working research lab and get your hands dirty as you dig for fossils and shark teeth. There is an aquatic area where you can see a skeleton of the world’s largest turtle as well as live turtles on display and a petrified forest which features a 3,000 year old sequoia tree stump. 

South Bend Chocolate Company - Ever wondered how your favorite sweet treat is made? Located within the same building as the dinosaur museum you can learn more about the history of chocolate and tour the factory - with lots of free samples along the way! Be sure to shop the outlet store for deeply discounted "almost perfect" treats and view the World's Largest Wall of Caramel Corn. There is an ice cream shop and a coffee bar and cafe on site as well. 

Continental Divide Park - After you're done touring both museums, hike or hop on a wagon ride to explore 90 rolling acres. Be sure to take your picture at the Continental Divide located 840 feet above sea level. We also loved visiting the herd of buffalo and taking in the views from Notre Dame Overlook. 

Potawatomi Zoo - This 23-acre zoo is home to over 400 different animals including an exhibit for giraffes where you can get up close and feed them. Other animal encounters include buffalo and bison and you can feed goat and llamas at the petting zoo. The zoo is so well designed and easy to navigate - especially with children. In addition to the animals, kids can climb on the playground or take ride on the carousel. Located within the same park as the zoo is a larger playground and splash pad.

South Bend Cubs - Summer isn't complete without a trip to the ballpark. Cheers on the Cubbies at Four Winds Field and enjoy game day promotions and giveaways, fireworks, and lots of entertainment for kids including the Fun Zone with inflatable slides, a newly remodeled playground and splash pad area all within the stadium. In addition to your classic ballpark treats, you can also enjoy pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, build-your-own nachos, mac and cheese and Philly cheesesteaks.  

East Race Waterway - Did you know we have white water rafting right here in the Midwest? East Race Waterway is the first artificial white water rafting course in North America and features Class 2 rapids in the heart of the city. You can purchase tickets for a single ride or a day pass to go as many times as you'd like. They provide all the gear you need including paddles, helmets and life jackets. Prepare to get wet as you fly down the 1,900 foot course. Once you reach the bottom, the guides will take your raft and paddles and you'll take a short walk back to the start. 

Howard Park - This award-winning park offers fun in all seasons. In the summer kids can enjoy an ADA-accessible, state-of-the-art playground. This isn't your average playground with innovative equipment and various levels to explore there is something for all ages here. Cool off in the Rask Family Fountains which feature interactive water fountains and jets that spray from the ground. The park’s west edge butts up against the St. Joseph River with a trail for walkers, runners and cyclists. 

Mishawaka Market - Happening on Sundays through September from 10a-2p, this outdoor market located at Ironworks Plaza features local vendors selling produce, crafts, baked goods, and so much more. You'll also find a variety of food trucks on site as well as live music and a kid zone. Ironworks Plaza is located along the riverwalk and features stunning gardens and walking paths to enjoy. 

South Bend Brew Werks - This family-owned brewpub features a variety of rotating beers on tap as well as refreshing summer cocktails. Their patio is dog friendly and the menu features gourmet sandwiches. We also had the pretzel with beer cheese as an appetizer.

Carmela's - You'll feel like you've stepped straight into Italy while dining here. This authentic Italian restaurant serves up classic dishes inspired by Carmela herself. We tried the shrimp fettuccine Alfredo as well as the vodka penne with meatballs and both were five star. 

​Biebs & Ash - Located at Ironworks Plaza within the same space at Sun King Brewery, this is a casual eatery with walk up counter service. They have a west-cost style flare serving epic smash burgers and loaded fries. You can also enjoy your meal on the outdoor patio overlooking the Mishawaka Market. 

Hammer & Quill - Located across the street from Howard Park, this bar is loved by locals and serves up creative cocktails in a relaxed environment. They have a large selection of spirits as well as fine wine. 

Simply Sweet - This food truck was located at the Mishawaka Market and had the best mini donuts and speciality drinks. I tried the smore's donuts which were the special that day paired with a dirty Dr. Pepper. So good and such a fun mix of drinks to choose.

This charming Midwest town probably isn't on your bucket list...but it should be! We recently visited the town of Winona Lake, Indiana located in Kosciusko County and instantly fell in love with this dreamy lakeside community. With nine miles of trails, peaceful waterfront views, spacious parks, a beach and splash pad, several delicious restaurants and a walkable shopping village, this town makes the perfect summer road trip.

During our trip we stayed at the Guest House on Terrace which offers three modern and spacious suites just steps away from the center of town. Onsite parking is available for guests (one vehicle per reservation) which was so convenient to be able to park and walk everywhere. We stayed in Suite C which is located on the lower level and offered two queen beds as well as a pull out sofa and can sleep up to 6 guests. The studio also has a full kitchen and bath. The design was modern with a charming, coastal feel. You can also enjoy beautiful views of Spring Fountain Park from the private patio. 

Trailhouse Village Bicycles - With nine miles of trails, renting bikes is the perfect way to explore this scenic town. Trailhouse offers bicycles, accessories, and riding apparel. You can either pedal along the paved bike paths throughout town or cross over to the peaceful and scenic Heritage Trail which runs along the river and through the woods with both paved and dirt trails. 

Pottery Bayou - Get crafty and paint your own pottery at this quaint studio located within the Village at Winona. Choose from a variety of animal figurines, vases or dish ware and they provide all the supplies you need to create your personalized piece. They also offer fused glass jewelry making. 

Village at Winona - Wander through a collection of Victorian homes that have been renovated into a unique retail space offering everything from clothes and jewelry, to culinary items and candy you are sure to something for everyone. The shops are centralized and easy to walk from one to the next in a two block radius. 

Winona Lake Limitless Park - Soak up the sun in the designated swimming area at the beach, cool off in the splash pad, swing and slide at the playground or enjoy water sport rentals including canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards. Free parking and restrooms are available on site. Splash pad is open at 11a daily. 

Public Art Trail Passport - Check off stops on the digital passport including murals and sculptures. It’s free to sign up and if you check in at at least five public art locations, you will win a free pair of sunglasses. Don't miss Payton's Wings and Beachy the Bison which are both located at Winona Lake Limitless Park.

Catch a sunset - The perfect way to end a busy day is by watching a stunning sunset over Winona Lake.

If you're in search of a midday pick-me-up they also offer a selection of teas and refreshing juices. The build your own breakfast sandwiches are so delicious and you can choose your bread, meat, veggies and sauce (try the house sauce..trust me!). 

Social Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop - Sprinkle kindness at this sweet shop serving up homemade waffle cones and over 20 flavors of premium hand dipped ice cream. Be sure to try the ice cream flight if you can't decide on your favorite. They also offer gourmet salads and sandwiches. You can enjoy your meal on the wrap around porch or seating in lawn while you listen to live music.

If you do drive and park onsite, there is a $15/day parking fee for vehicles. Kayak and paddle board rentals are also available.

Summers in Southwest Michigan are full of relaxing beach days, stunning sunset walks, al fresco dining, wine tasting among the vineyards, farmers markets strolls, and countless other adventures. There is something to enjoy for all ages and interests and honestly the hardest part will be deciding where to start. Start the day off right at 2nd & Main Coffeehouse which is located in the heart of downtown Niles. Here you can sip on one their rotating seasonal drinks or try four different varieties (hot or iced) when you order a signature coffee flight. They even have a kid-friendly flight option! Their food menu features smoothie bowls, toasts, paninis and more. In the afternoon and evening hours they transform into a wine and cocktail bar. 

After your caffeine fix, head to Riverfront Park to let your little ones burn off some energy. The park is home to one of the largest playgrounds around featuring nine different slides and something fun for all ages to enjoy. In addition to the playground, the park is located right along the river with a paved walking path, swings, and workout equipment. 

​Continue your outdoor adventures at Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. Here you can enjoy miles of hiking trails and beautiful gardens at this 105 acre property. There is so much here for families to enjoy here including a Miniature Railway Garden and a Children's Nature Adventure Garden with a slide, outdoor games, and metal sculptures. Be sure to pick up a scavenger hunt and keep your eyes peeled to see what you might find. Inside the welcome center guests can also enjoy a cafe serving mouth-watering pies and other treats as well as a gift shop with nature-inspired goods.

End your day at River Saint Joe, a farmstead brewery where you can enjoy food and drinks made with ingredients grown on the farm or just down the road. On tap they offer farmhaus ales, wine, cider and non-alcoholic sodas. Their food menu changes regularly based on the local harvest. In addition to their stunning taproom, their outdoor space features fire pits, a bocce ball court and covered picnic table seating. 

Lincoln Township Library which recently underwent a full remodel and their children’s area is beautifully designed with engaging, open-ended toys, STEM stations, and of course plenty of books for all ages. Located directly behind the library is Lincoln Township Community Center Park. Here kids can run, jump and splash the day away. The playground features climbing equipment, swings, and slides suitable for a wide range of ages as well as an adjacent 1,874 square foot splash pad. The water is touch activated an features a tunnel, frog fountain, water blasters, and other interactive elements.. There is also a community center onsite with covered picnic tables and restrooms, pickleball courts, sand volleyball courts, and a paved walking path with a storybook trail. 

For lunch, head to DogSlinger which is home to the "best dogs on this side of Lake Michigan." You can enjoy classic hot dogs and sausages, or if you're feeling adventurous, try one of their gourmet dogs which come loaded with insane toppings. Think pizza dog, nacho dog, and buffalo dog! There is definitely something for all ages to enjoy here. 

End your day at Peat's Cider Social which is sure to win you the cool parent award. This retro 1960's bowling alley has been beautifully restored with a fun and funky mid-century vibe. Here you can bowl by the hour, play arcade games, or sip cider on their open air patio. The patio is dog friendly and features plenty of seating and various yard games. Outside drinks are not permitted but you can bring your own food. 

Is there a better way to start your morning than strolling the farmer's market? The St. Joseph market is located downtown along Lake Bluff Park overlooking Lake Michigan and takes places Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., May through October. Here you'll find fresh, in-season fruits, vegetables, and flowers as well as other vendors selling locally raised meats, eggs, cheeses, and artisan goods.

In the afternoon, walk down the bluff to Silver Beach County Park which was recently named the number 3 beach in Michigan by USA Today. In addition to the beautiful sandy shores of Lake Michigan, Silver Beach also boasts a ton of fun for families. Wally & Gertz serves up delicious beach treats including hot dogs, ice cream, and fresh squeezed lemonade. The brand new, fully accessible playground is now open featuring seven slides, a custom Lifeguard Stand, and a 33 ft zip line. It is well designed for a variety of ages and located just off the sand so it's a great place to start or end your day at the beach.
 
Whirlpool Compass Fountain is a fun and free place to cool off and marvel at the giant cannons as they spray water high in the air. The cannons are on a timed schedule and rotate between smaller fountains that spray from the ground. There are several new shade pavilions that have been installed and bathrooms/changing rooms are currently under construction. 

Located within Silver Beach Center, directly across the from the fountain, are two other amazing adventures. Curious Kids' Discovery Zone offers interactive, hands on fun. Kids can splash in the Lake Michigan water table, climb the lighthouse tower or mix up cookies in a larger than life Kitchenaid mixer. Tickets are $6/pp ages 1 and older; online reservations are required during the summer months. While you're there you can also take a spin on the Silver Beach Carousel. Purchase tokens on site and enjoy some timeless fun with a collection of 48 magnificent, hand-carved figures and two chariots to choose from. There is also a small snack shop and gift shop on site. 

For dinner head to Clementine's Too, located along the scenic St. Joseph River, and enjoy your meal on the outdoor patio as you watch boats pass by. Be sure to try their colossal onion rings which come served in a six-inch or foot long tower. They also have a full menu with pasta, salads, burgers, and signature dishes like prime rib and lake perch. 

End the day with a breathtaking Lake Michigan sunset at Tiscornia Park. Here you can walk to the iconic North Pier lighthouse or watch the sky change colors with your toes in the sand. Leashed dogs are allowed on the sidewalk and pier only (not on the beach).  The park does have restrooms available and there is a paid parking lot on site. 

Rising Kites is the perfect place for an early morning pick me up. Located in downtown Bridgman, not only are they serving up amazing coffee, they also have an amazing mission to employ and celebrate people with disabilities. We love taking our daughter here as they are very family friendly and have an indoor play space as well as a fenced in turf yard outside. After coffee, spend sometime in downtown Bridgman popping into some of the shops including Accents, The Sandpiper, Clothes Horse or Fusion Gallery. 

Blueberries are in season (mid-July) so spend the afternoon at Starbuck's Blueberry Farm picking your own bucket as you make some fun memories wandering through the fields in search of the juiciest berries on the bushes. There are six different varieties of berries at the farm and you can take them home in a box or bag for easy travel. They also have fresh pre-picked berries available at the roadside stand. 

Bridgman is home to the stunning shores of Weko Beach which is nestled among 42 acres of picturesque wooded dunes. Here you can cool off in Lake Michigan, rent kayaks and stand up paddle boards, or climb the boardwalk steps for breathtaking views above the dunes. There is a $15/day fee to park on site. If you're traveling with your furry friend, the boardwalk at Weko Beach connects to the dog friendly section of Warren Dunes State Park. The playing of Taps by a live bugle occurs at sunset every night from Memorial Day to Labor Day and they also host free concerts on Sunday evenings throughout the summer. 

For dinner, head just up the road to Haymarket Brewery. Their spacious outdoor patio is dog-friendly and has several picnic tables as well as fire pit seating. Here you can enjoy wood fire pizza or gourmet sandwiches paired with a great selection of craft beer, cider and seltzers on tap. End the day at Mikey's Drive-In, a 50s style diner where you can pull up and order right from your car. They have some of the best ice cream around - the peanut butter bonanza parfait was life changing - as well as dirty sodas and a full menu with burgers, hot dogs and more. 

Start your day at Clifford’s Coffee Canal - a dreamy garden oasis nestled along the river serving delicious coffee as well as breakfast and lunch. You have to try their fresh baked muffins! They have tons of different seating areas including a full patio outdoors as well as an assortment of plants, flowers, and succulents for purchase. 

Next, head to Sarrett Nature Center where you can get up close to the many reptiles and other species who live indoors or head outside to walk the nine miles of scenic trails. Be sure to take in the epic views from the tree top walkway, test your balance on the highline adventure trail, or climb on the nature playscape. They also have a butterfly house with dozens of species flying all around the beautiful flowers. 

In the afternoon take a spin on the go kart track or play a round of mini golf at Hidden Point Fun Park. We love the design of this course so much. The park also offers batting cages, a basketball shooting game, and ice cream. 

Before dinner, spend some time wandering around the Arts District to admire the colorful murals and when you’ve worked up an appetite head to Brick House for unique cocktails and amazing burgers and other handhelds.
