During our winter weekend getaway to Charlevoix, Michigan we had the opportunity to partake in one of the most epic adventures you can have in Northern Michigan during the snowy season - winter rafting! This is a guided tour and definitely worth checking out if you love outdoor experiences in the winter.

Winter rafting trips are hosted by Jordan Valley Outfitters and include a scenic two hour float down the East Jordan River. You will definitely want to book in advance on their website to ensure you secure your spot as these trips tend to book up fast especially on the weekends.
You'll start your adventure at the Jordan Valley Outfitters headquarters (311 N Lake St, East Jordan, MI 49727) where you'll check in and then board a bus to take a short drive to where you'll launch your raft into the water. The tour company provides all the gear you need for your trip including life jackets and paddles. While you don't really have to worry about getting wet or falling in - it's a very peaceful float down the river - you will want to make sure you dress warm and are prepared for snowy weather. This waterproof winter ski jacket is what I wore during the trip and it is the warmest coat I've ever owned. I also love pairing with a thermal base layer and snow pants.
Once you arrive at the launch site you'll be assigned to a raft with an experienced guide. You can book a private tour but if you don't you'll be paired with other adventurers (each raft holds 4-6 people) which was actually so fun to meet new friends during your float. The guides will help you board into the raft and give a basic rundown of the equipment and safety procedures. And then you're off!
This isn't your typical white water style rafting so you don't have to work too hard to paddle but there were a few smaller rapids and trees that you'll need to duck under or help steer around together. Our guide was amazing and was so knowledgable about the local area and shared a lot of really fun facts and stories as we traversed down the river. If you're lucky you may even spot some wildlife including beavers, river otters, white tail deer, ducks, and the occasional American Bald Eagle. On the morning of our trip, the trees were covered in a fresh blanket of snow which made it even more magical. You'll stop about halfway to get out and enjoy hot chocolate and treats on the river bank. This is also a great opportunity to get some scenic photos with your group. I also suggest a waterproof phone case if you want to take photos and videos while you're paddling. Overall I highly recommend this experience as one you'll never forget and a great way to get out and enjoy the beautiful winter scenery. For more epic winter adventures in Charlevoix, read this post.
